Softphone

Definition

A softphone is an application that lets a computer or smartphone act as a telephone endpoint instead of requiring a dedicated desk phone.

How it works

The app registers with a compatible phone system using SIP or another supported technology and uses the device microphone, speaker or headset.

Business example

A remote account manager makes and receives work calls on a laptop without a separate office handset.

What to consider

Reliable operation requires a network connection, configured credentials and audio permissions. Background calling behaviour on mobiles may depend on the operating system.
