MOS

Definition

MOS (Mean Opinion Score) is a measure of perceived speech quality, commonly reported on a scale of roughly 1 to 5.

How it works

Traditional MOS is obtained from human listeners rating audio quality. Monitoring platforms may also calculate estimated MOS values using models; these are predictions rather than direct listener scores. Results depend on the tested audio path and the assessment method.

Business example

A contact-centre team compares voice-quality scores before and after a network infrastructure upgrade.

What to consider

Do not rely on MOS alone when assessing call quality. Review delay, jitter, packet loss and user feedback, and distinguish measured MOS from model-based estimates.
