G.711 Codec

Definition

G.711 is a digital telephony audio codec using PCM speech encoding at 64 kbit/s before network overhead.

How it works

G.711 uses a fixed audio bit rate and generally introduces little algorithmic delay. In IP telephony, RTP, UDP and IP headers add overhead, so the actual bandwidth required per call exceeds 64 kbit/s. G.711 is widely supported but may be less bandwidth-efficient than modern compressed codecs.

Business example

Two office IP phones negotiate G.711 for calls over a network with ample capacity.

What to consider

Account for packet overhead, endpoint compatibility and link capacity. Selecting G.711 alone does not prevent packet loss or network congestion.
