Opus Codec

Short definition

Opus Codec: Opus is a modern audio codec designed for speech and music across a wide range of bit rates and network conditions.

Meaning and how it works

Opus supports flexible operating modes and can adapt to different bandwidth constraints. It is widely used in WebRTC and Internet calling. Wideband audio support does not mean every PBX, SIP trunk or desk phone can negotiate Opus end to end.

Business applications

  • Business scenario:

A browser-based calling application uses Opus to maintain intelligible speech over a fluctuating Internet connection.

What to check before implementation

Verify codec support on both endpoints and whether transcoding is needed. Media processing can add server load or latency.
