QoS for VoIP
Short definition
QoS for VoIP refers to traffic-management mechanisms that prioritise delay-sensitive voice packets over less time-critical traffic.
Meaning and how it works
Network devices can classify packets, mark them using DSCP and place them into suitable queues. QoS is especially useful when voice and large data transfers share limited capacity. However, prioritisation inside one office network does not guarantee the same treatment on the public Internet.
Business applications
- Business scenario:
Employees continue making clear calls while colleagues upload large files because the office router prioritises voice packets.
What to check before implementation
Check where priority markings are preserved, whether bottlenecks exist beyond your network and whether overall bandwidth is sufficient.
