IVR

Definition

IVR (Interactive Voice Response) is an automated phone menu that plays prompts and lets callers choose a department or action using keypad input or, in some systems, speech.

How it works

When a call arrives, the platform plays a greeting and waits for a choice. DTMF digits or recognised speech determine the next routing step.

Business example

A clinic offers options for appointments, opening hours or reception so callers can reach the appropriate destination.

What to consider

Avoid deep menus and long recordings. Offer a clear path to a human agent and handle invalid input or timeouts gracefully.
