IP Telephony

Definition

IP telephony is the provision of telephone calls over networks that use the Internet Protocol. It can combine VoIP, SIP connections, business numbers, a PBX and call-management tools.

How it works

An incoming call reaches an operator's IP platform and is then routed to a handset, application, team or voice menu. Internal calls may remain on the company's network.

Business example

An online retailer uses one public number and a call queue to connect customers with available sales representatives.

What to consider

Before deployment, assess internet reliability, backup power, simultaneous call capacity, device compatibility and carrier requirements.
