PBX Business Hours

Definition

A schedule of departmental availability configured in a business telephone system.

How it works

Business hours can control more than department routing: they may also determine announcements, queues or callback options. Call handling rules determine the order of destinations, ringing time and fallback behaviour. The exact result depends on PBX configuration and whether endpoints are reachable.

Business example

An administrator adds holiday exceptions so callers hear the correct message instead of waiting for an unavailable team.

What to consider

Test busy, no-answer and simultaneous-call cases. Assign responsibility for maintaining routing rules and provide a clear next step when the preferred destination is unavailable.
