Time-Based Routing

Definition

A PBX rule that changes call routing according to the time of day or day of week.

How it works

The schedule is evaluated when the call arrives; holidays, time zones and a fallback destination need separate rules. Call handling rules determine the order of destinations, ringing time and fallback behaviour. The exact result depends on PBX configuration and whether endpoints are reachable.

Business example

During business hours a call reaches sales; outside those hours it goes to voicemail or an on-call agent.

What to consider

Test busy, no-answer and simultaneous-call cases. Assign responsibility for maintaining routing rules and provide a clear next step when the preferred destination is unavailable.
