VPN for Business Telephony

Definition

A protected network connection used to access phone systems remotely.

How it works

A VPN can provide an encrypted network tunnel, but it does not eliminate latency, jitter or packet loss on a congested path. Protecting telephony and customer data combines technical controls, access rights and organisational processes. Different communication channels can require different safeguards.

Business example

A branch connects its IP phones to a central PBX through a managed VPN tunnel.

What to consider

Review lawful data handling, key and access management, retention periods, audit trails and recovery procedures. No single mechanism replaces an overall security policy.
