Dial Plan

Definition

A dial plan is a set of rules defining extension numbers, prefixes and how telephone calls are routed.

How it works

A business PBX interprets dialled digits to distinguish internal extensions from external destinations and select the correct route. Rules may examine number length, prefixes and calling permissions. A consistent plan simplifies expansion across offices.

Business example

A company assigns 2xx extensions to sales and 3xx to support, using the same numbering structure in multiple branches.

What to consider

Check overlapping number ranges, international formats, emergency calling requirements and existing IVR flows before changing the plan. Misconfiguration can misroute calls.
