Packet Loss

Definition

Packet loss occurs when some network packets fail to reach their destination.

How it works

During VoIP calls, lost RTP packets can create missing syllables or distorted audio. The impact depends on the loss rate, codec and packet-loss concealment features. Congestion, wireless interference and faulty networking equipment are possible causes.

Business example

A support engineer compares packet-loss measurements on primary and backup Internet links while investigating choppy speech.

What to consider

Packet loss is not the same as network latency. Measure it along the path and pay attention to short bursts of loss, which may sound worse than the average suggests.
