Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP)

Definition

A secure transport protocol for real-time audio and video packets.

How it works

SRTP protects media packets, but it does not replace secure SIP signalling or proper key management. Protecting telephony and customer data combines technical controls, access rights and organisational processes. Different communication channels can require different safeguards.

Business example

Compatible endpoints use SRTP to help protect the confidentiality and integrity of call media.

What to consider

Review lawful data handling, key and access management, retention periods, audit trails and recovery procedures. No single mechanism replaces an overall security policy.
