SIP URI

Short definition

SIP URI: A SIP URI is an address identifying a SIP user or service, commonly written as sip:user@example.com.

Meaning and how it works

A SIP URI can include a scheme, user part, domain and optional parameters. SIP systems use that information to identify the destination and route signalling. It is not necessarily a public telephone number and should not be treated as a normal website URL.

Business applications

  • Business scenario:

A company routes calls between branch offices using colleagues’ SIP URIs rather than external phone numbers.

What to check before implementation

Validate the address format, domain routing rules, calling permissions and security policies. A valid URI does not guarantee that the endpoint is registered or reachable.
