RTP

Definition

RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) transports real-time media, including voice audio, across IP networks.

How it works

After call setup, packets containing audio and timing information flow over RTP. The receiver uses the packet sequence and timestamps to support playback.

Business example

During a typical IP phone conversation, SIP manages call setup while RTP carries the actual voice packets.

What to consider

RTP does not encrypt its content by default. SRTP provides media protection. Packet loss, jitter and latency can affect call quality.
