Personal Data Masking

Definition

Concealing sensitive information in interfaces, transcripts or recordings.

How it works

Masking hides sensitive fields in displays or recordings, but the underlying data may still exist and require protection. Protecting telephony and customer data combines technical controls, access rights and organisational processes. Different communication channels can require different safeguards.

Business example

During payment support, an agent reviewing a case cannot see an entire payment-card number.

What to consider

Review lawful data handling, key and access management, retention periods, audit trails and recovery procedures. No single mechanism replaces an overall security policy.
